Scottish Food & Drink September: Innovation. Celebrating Flavour!

As the summer draws to a close we’re excited welcome Scottish Food & Drink September, a month-long celebration of the people, products, and produce that make this sector so special.

Now in its 16th year, the campaign continues to shine a spotlight on Scotland’s world-class food and drink industry – a cornerstone of our economy, culture, and identity.

A Month of Innovation

This year’s theme is innovation, showcasing the cutting-edge approaches embraced by food and drink businesses across Scotland. From new product development to pioneering sustainability initiatives, the campaign highlights the energy and creativity of an industry that continues to evolve while remaining rooted in Scotland’s rich natural larder.

The aim is to:

  • Showcase the variety and quality of Scottish produce.

  • Drive increased sourcing and sales across retail, foodservice, and hospitality.

  • Champion the producers and manufacturers at the heart of the industry.

Fife Producers Leading the Way

One pioneering business, and much loved Food from Fife member, that captures this year’s theme is Growers Garden. Founded in 2019 by 16 farming families in Fife, the collective has expanded across Scotland as more growers recognised the power of working together to tackle food waste.

Their mission is simple but powerful – transforming ‘wonky’ or surplus vegetables into high-quality snacks. By investing £2 million in a unique extrusion facility in Cupar, they’ve created a way to process fresh vegetables directly into crisps – an innovation that conventional factories cannot offer.

Since launch, Growers Garden has saved over 41 tonnes of food from landfill and secured more than 350 stockists across the UK. It’s a story of collaboration, sustainability, and ingenuity – values that resonate across Fife and the wider Scottish food and drink sector.

Why It Matters

Scotland’s food and drink industry is worth around £15 billion to the economy and supports more than 129,000 jobs. From family farms and artisan producers to global brands, businesses are driving solutions to challenges such as food waste, sustainability, and healthier eating.

As Mairi Gougeon, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Land Reform and Islands, says:

“Scottish Food & Drink September is a celebration of the people, passion, and pioneering spirit that make Scotland’s food and drink truly world-class. This year’s theme of innovation reflects the efforts and passion that our producers continue to make to maintain that standing.”

Following a bumper summer for Scotland’s soft fruit sector, this year’s celebration will also shine a light on berries with the Berries of Scotland campaign running for it’s final month throughout September. Berries are a symbol of both heritage and innovation, and a key contributor to Scotland’s reputation for quality.

Celebrate in Fife

Here in Fife, we’re proud to be home to an extraordinary range of producers and hospitality businesses – from farm shops and distilleries to chocolatiers, cheesemakers, and bakers – all part of the story of Scotland’s food and drink success.

Throughout September, events, markets, and tastings across the region will give locals and visitors alike the chance to enjoy the best of our larder, and to celebrate the innovation and flavour that make Fife such an exciting food and drink destination.
